GRANITE FIREPLACE
For the first half of the nineteenth century, the Connecticut shoreline stone quarry at the East River was a busy place. Grey granite was cut, hand finished and loaded on ox carts for delivery to local building sites.
In the small town of Clinton, a famous local man, John Stanton, built the Clinton Baptist Meetinghouse. Four years of labor and a tremendous amount of stone and timber went into the creation of the Meethouse in 1835. This historic landmark stood until 1979 when the Board of Deacons decided that a new church was necessary and that the Meetinghouse should be demolished.
Many meetings later, I convinced the Board that they could not destroy this important part of our architectural past. This began the long process of un-building. Board by board, beam by beam and stone by stone, I documented and dismantled the entire structure and moved it from its original site.
Over ten years later “Granite Fireplace” has been created from the slabs which were once the steps to this beautiful church. Equaled only by one found in a European castle, this fireplace will be the focal point of any Great Room
